Are The Fast and the Furious films still going? I watched the first one then decided against bothering with any of the sequels, using the logic that as the original was essentially nonsense salvaged by cool car chases, the rest weren't going to bring much other than more beautiful people and fast cars to the table. Which is a fun mixture, though not exactly mentally stimulating.
But assuming there are still people out there who care about The Fast and the Furious ??“ and I-play obviously thinks there are ??“ here's a game that brings you one half of the films' subject matter. That's the cars, not the eye candy.
Although The Fast and the Furious: Streets is decent eye candy alone. The title lets the cat out of the bag with the '3D' bit ??“ everything is indeed modelled in three dimensions and looks very polished. And despite the number of polygons the game is shifting, there's barely a hint of slowdown during races. One of the most important bits of The Fast and the Furious ??“ the fast bit ??“ is certainly present and correct, and it really feels like you're rattling along at 100mph.
The other important bit ??“ the cars ??“ is also here in abundance. There are 32 in total, and winning them all is the overall goal; it's not just about winning races. The tracks and the competition really plays second fiddle to the cars themselves. Which is just as well because there's a meagre selection of tracks, and although Arcade mode contains 16 races, these are really the same four at four difficulty levels, with you starting at different points on the track, taking slightly different routes, and going around them in the opposite direction.

Fortunately, the number of races modes and cars do make up for that. There are four different modes: Cop Chase, Road Race, Drag Race and Drift Race.
Cop Chase has you roaring around a course against a police car, trying to avoid getting busted by being bashed into. Road Race is a straightforward race to the finish line against three other cars, while Drift Race is similar but with you having to earn a certain number of drift points to win. Drag Race is the most different from the rest, with the steering of your car done for you while you just concentrate on shifting up a gear the moment your revs needle turns green and triggering nitro at the most opportune moments.
Within its subject matter, you can't say there's a lack of variety. A strategic element is also added with the pink slip betting. At the start of each race you choose your car then choose which of your opponent's cars you want to bet a pink slip on. That effectively means that if you beat that car, you get to keep it. However, if they beat you, they take your ride. Unless it's the last car left in your garage, in which case they conveniently decide they don't want it so as not to spell the end of the game.
Collecting all of these cars quickly becomes an obsession. You win two, lose one, win two more and slowly try to fill your garage with all 32. As you progress through the game's four difficulty levels (from Rookie upwards), bigger, better and faster cars become available. But, of course, they become harder to win, too.
There's an obvious problem with this concept. Which is that if you're struggling at one race, you can gradually lose all of your cars from the best down to worst and be left battling with one really rubbish car. And from my experience of the game it seems impossible to finish drag races on the higher difficulty levels with a slow car.
It's not a big problem, though. It just means you'll be playing The Fast and the Furious: Streets (and possibly getting a bit furious in the process) for some time. No bad thing at all, because the easy arcade style controls, speedy races, generous number of cars (which all handle differently) and well-pitched difficulty curve all add up to a racing game that reflects the essence of the film franchise it's based on: a little shallow, but a lot of fun.

There's been a rash of highly respectable, highly glamorous 3D racing games lately. Looks them all: Asphalt 4: Elite Racing, The Fast and the Furious: Streets, Rally Stars 3D and Rally Master Pro. If you're a fan of bombing around in a car, it's been wild.
But, as The Joker is fond of asking, "why so serious?" Where are the preposterous jumps, the hazardous grandstanding, the vicious grit-spitting clouds of dust? Where's the impractical but novel side-on perspective.
Here it is. Living Mobile's Pure is a stunt-studded quad bike sim in the style of FMX Hardcore and Stuntman Ignition, promising a range of environments containing dunes, icebergs, cliffs, and valleys. You'll be able to jump over helicopters, leap implausible distances, and generally do whatever you like without dying.

It's wrong how much I love South Park. Wrong enough for Trey Parker to write an entire episode about how disturbing it can be when a grown man loves a cartoon so very, very hard. And Butters is a particular favourite ??“ I never get bored of the wild and imaginative ways in which the South Park gang torture him for no reason whatsoever.
I'm wearing a Cartman T-shirt right now that says "This is all a bunch of tree huggin' hippy crap!" so you can understand how excited I was to test out this all new South Park game. But my shirt, it seems, was unfortunately prophetic.
Here we take control of Butters in a mobile adaptation of the Imaginationland trilogy of episodes from series 11. Right away there's a seed of doubt, as these weren't the greatest episodes we've seen lately ??“ they pushed the satire limits a little too hard and turned out kinda preachy.
It's not a huge surprise that developer Mr. Goodliving (awesome name, chaps) decided to take inspiration from those episodes, however, what with the vast array of colourful characters and settings portrayed. It is something of a surprise that very few have actually been utilised, however.

South Park Imaginationland might not take much of a cue from Stan, Kyle, Cartman or Kenny (or Butters, other than his chirpy visage), but it does take more than a few pointers from Mr. Goodliving's previous game, Turbo Camels: Circus Extreme.
Essentially, Butters's own game appears to take the majority of its gameplay mechanics from Circus Extreme. While we loved that game, however, Imaginationland doesn't work nearly as well. Much of the enjoyment of Turbo Camels came from the rag doll physics and spectacularly surreal big top show. Imaginationland feels, in comparison with its two year old stable-mate, a little bit flat.
You play Butters trapped in a bubble. To begin with, you can move around the playing area and scope out where the collectable rainbows are, and where the finishing point is (which is in the shape of a landing pad with a purple flag on it).
An arrow points the initial direction in which Butters will be catapulted, then he bounces off the walls, floor and ceiling collecting the rainbows until he comes to a stop ??“ hopefully ??“ on the landing pad.
Rows of mushrooms are arranged on the platforms of most levels, to act as a springboard for Butters to perform his high flying action. If you can get him to land on the mushrooms, each time he bounces off them (or a wall) his 'imagination dust' meter fills up. When there's imagination dust available, you can use some to shunt Butters in another direction.
If he comes to a stop anywhere other than the landing pad without any imagination dust, you've failed the level. Each level requires lil' Leopold Stodge to collect a certain number of rainbows before resting on the landing pad, then it's on to the next level.
A paper cut-out of South Park themes have been roughly stuck over the top of a more or less entertaining game, but little consideration has been given to threading any kind of recognisable nuances from the show into the gameplay. Ardent fans of Turbo Camels might draw some pleasure from a new set of rocket propelled (sorry, imagination dust propelled) levels, but its value as a South Park tie-in is severely limited.
It looks the part, as the simplistic South Park styling has translated very nicely to the micro-screen, and gameplay meets a certain minimum standard established by its predecessor, but this is a game that demonstrates very little effort to update the Circus Extreme gameplay or provide anything South Park fans will quite rightly be expecting. It's fine, in other words, but not nearly as good as it should be.
To think that South Park could have provided so much inspiration for a platform game makes it an even greater tragedy that the game reflects the TV show in appearance only. What Cartman would have to say about this, I can only guess...

Inquisitor's Torment 3D is a stylish attempt to bring the kind of game that worked so well on Playstations and PCs, the adventure game, to a new audience on mobile phones. The genre is all but dead on modern consoles, but have Boolat succeeded in reinvigorating the adventure game, finding it a brand new home on mobiles? Is there any room for it in a market dominated by quick action and puzzle titles?
In the vein of games like Darkest Fear, Inquisitor's Torment 3D has a definite air of mystery about it. You're thrown straight in, given a gun - not knowing anything; where you are, who you are, what you're supposed to do exactly. But all will be revealed, and the storytelling is definitely a strong point of the game. One thing worth noting though is the rather attractive female character you play as, in 3 full dimensions no less! It's tough classifying a game such as this one. Is it an adventure? Yes, but there's also shooting, some action and puzzling into the mix. It is a slow burner, don't expect to jump into this game for instant entertainment. No, this game will take up your time, but you will get your rewards through solving what to do next and shooting those unrelenting zombies. If you want instant gratification play PacMan, but for a more involved and intriguing experience, Inquisitor's Torment 3D really pleases. The more time you put into it, the more fun it gets, too. Expect lots of puzzle solving, looking for things but also action elements in the form of shooting and defending yourself.
The control system implemented in Inquisitor???????s Torment 3D is a bit tricky at first and takes some getting used to, but works well and is effective after a while of playing. It sounds real simple ????? use 2 to go forward, 4 and 6 to turn and 8 to go back. Oh, and 5 to shoot. But in effect, this is a 3D game and turning around and aiming at your enemy is harder than it seems. The aiming system isn???????t very good either and you have to be pretty close to your victim in order to properly attack it, and it takes round about 10 bullets to kill a zombie, which does seem a tad unnecessary.
Part of the game's appeal is the way that it uses camera angles. Given the 3D nature of the game, often (every few seconds in fact) the camera angles will change giving a new perspective on the action. It can be very effective, looking for an object or an item can be made easier by getting a new look on the area and it also gives the game a cinematic touch - the horror/adventure movie atmospherics are felt all the more by the changing angles, just like in a movie. This can get a bit much though, the angles change so often that they become a distraction and break up the flow of the game. So it???????s a mixed blessing.
But about the graphics - they really are good. And when I say good, I mean damn fine, the type of graphics that would make you walk up to your friends and say 'check this out.' A year or two ago this game wouldn't've been possible, and I suggest buying this game almost just so you can just spend some time exploring it, walking around, seeing how far mobile games have developed. But get past the gorgeous details, and well, you are actually left with a dull game. The environments in particular - the grey castle, the boring looking zombies, the games colours are drab and not really very exciting, especially considering the backgrounds and settings in the game don't really change from level to level. So from a technical standpoint the graphics are outstanding and yet I can't help but notice they're uninspired from a creative perspective and could've been jazzed up.
The sound is excellent and really brings out the mood of the gameplay through the creepy music, although more sound effects could've been used by the developers.
Boolat have done a good job with Inquisitor's Torment 3D. Thumbs up for trying something different, taking the time to make sure the graphics were up to scratch and not just making an easy zombie shoot-em-up, but instead creating an atmospheric medieval adventure. Whether all this works in practice however is a different matter, and although there is plenty to do in Inquisitor's Torment 3D, it does become a tad boring and tiresome walking through the castle always trying to work out what to do next. You don't exactly walk quickly as well, it's slow going and your patience might run out before the game is through. But if the idea and look appeals to you, try it out, you might be surprised! (Or just very scared.....)
